Today’s business relations and value chains know no boundaries. The involvement and integration into global supply chains open up tremendous opportunities for producing countries to develop and diversify their economy. However, labour, social and environmental standards are regularly undermined within these complex supply networks. Globally, the response to this situation is a greater focus on sustainability as well as human rights and environmental due diligence. Two such significant responses are the new German Act on Corporate Due Diligence Obligations in Supply Chains passed in July 2021, and the Proposal for EU’s Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence adopted in February 2022.
In Vietnam, labour and environmental due diligence (HREDD) is a rather new concept, for which broad awareness is not yet available. Often, the term is used interchangeably with “compliance” and “social responsibility”, and to many stakeholders, the term of “responsible business conduct” is usually preferred to HREDD. It is, therefore, important to create expertise and understanding the concept of HREDD (as per UNGP and OECD Guidelines) and to draw a link to the realities in Vietnam including typical risks, impacts and current responsible business practice.
Being in the top 5 largest seafood export markets, improving the ability to meet international regulations and standards of the European Union (EU) for the export of seafood products of Vietnam and therefore, improve its competitiveness and penetrate strongly into the EU market is essential for the seafood industry. This industry is directly affected when the new German Act and the Draft EU Directive are passed and come into force.
Responsible Business Helpdesk (RBH), hosted and managed by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) with technical and financial support from the German government, is going to be a local helpdesk that inform, raise awareness, and advise companies in Vietnam on standards and requirements of HREDD and network them with local service providers in the country.
In order to raising awareness of enterprises in the seafood industry on this important issue, VCCI in collaboration with Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporting and Processing (VASEP) co-organized a seminar on: “Seafood industry in Vietnam and due diligence on the supply chain”
